About ASX short-selling data

What are the most shorted stocks on the ASX?

StockTrack ranks every ASX-listed stock by the percentage of issued shares sold short, using the gross short position data that market participants report to ASIC. The ranking is refreshed each time new ASIC data is released, so you can always see which ASX companies currently carry the highest short interest.

How current is the short data?

Short positions are reported to ASIC on a T+4 basis, meaning the figures relate to positions held four trading days earlier. This is the most timely short-selling data publicly available for the Australian market, and StockTrack updates its rankings as soon as each release is published.

What does days to cover mean?

Days to cover estimates how many days of average trading it would take short sellers to buy back all shorted shares. It is calculated by dividing the reported short positions by the 50-day average daily volume. A higher figure can indicate a more crowded short and greater short-squeeze potential.
